How to Cope with Crisis

It is easy to understand that someone is hurting if they are physically ill or have been badly injured. Emotional pain may not be visible. However, it can be just as unbearable.

Anyone who doesn't feel they can keep themselves safe; or has concerns about a friend or family member, should seek immediate help. In this section, there is information for how to reach out and get the right level of support.

Here are some of the organisations who may be able to help

  • Papyrus is a national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Their vision is for a society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who may have suicidal thoughts.
  • The Samaritans are a UK charity that is available 24 hours a day; 365 days a year. They answer more than 5 million calls for help via their listening service, email, letter and/or face-to-face service.
  • DistrACT is an Android/iOS mobile application, which has been created by practising UK health professionals together with people with lived experiences of self-harm and experts in self-harm and suicide prevention.
  • Stay Alive is an Android/iOS mobile application designed as a suicide prevention resource for the UK, packed full of useful information and tools to help you stay safe in a crisis. It can be used by individuals who are having thoughts of suicide or where there are concerns about someone else. It offers strategies for staying safe and tips on how to stay grounded when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
