MARION CENTRE - UPDATE

I am delighted that the Minister has confirmed his approval for the Marion Centre developments.

The formal acceptance includes approval from the Minister for an all weather Astroturf and the improvements to the main rugby playing fields; which I am particularly pleased about as I felt that there needed to be some significant improvements to the grounds of the school if we were to going to allow the Marion Centre to take up some space on what is already a fairly compact site.

So in this first step we have been able to gain what I believe is a significant improvement to our school facilities and I can assure you that the PE department are delighted.  The next step is to apply for planning permission and that process will be underway very shortly.

GOOD GRIEF SCULPTURE EXHIBITION

We’re presently hosting an exhibition of sculptures on the theme of Grief and Loss housed in the main hall.   Pupils in year 9 will be exploring the meaning behind the heads in lessons with the RE and Art teachers over the coming week.   The lessons will explore the grief cycle and aim to provide pupils with the emotional vocabulary to deal with loss and separation in their life at present or in the future.   Each sculpture deals with an aspect of the grief process: DENIAL, DISBELIEF, QUESTIONING, ANGER, DEPRESSION, ACCEPTANCE, HEALING, PEACE. If you would like to know more about the heads then please follow this link:  http://www.westhillendowment.org/goodgrief.html.    If any parents (or church groups) would like the visit the exhibition then please email me This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I would be happy to facilitate this after school.   The statues are with us for  two weeks.

Leavers Eucharist - Wednesday 5th May 2010

Pupils organised and lead their end of Year 11 Eucharist today, with prayers written by Leavers and also a dialogue sermon preached by Year 11 pupil, Pearl Mlambo.   Download the document below if you would like to read the sermon, prayer and readings.   Musical items were also prepared and offered by Year 11 pupils to the great enjoyment of all who participated in the Eucharist.   It was a truly spirited and prayerful act of worship and a fitting end to the last five years.   We wish Year 11 every blessing in their forthcoming exams and, to those moving on, be assured of our continued love and prayers.  Go well.

Rev G Williams, Chaplain

WJEC Student of the Year 2009 - Jonathan Nash

Congratulations to Jonathan Nash, who has been awarded WJEC 2009 Student of the Year. Jonathan was a Year 13 pupil at the Bishop of Llandaff CiW High School last year.

Jonathan won the award having gained five A grades in WJEC subjects at A Level.

Jonathan chose to sit Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Further Mathematics "partly because I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to study at university, and partly because I honestly could not choose which subject to drop."

Jonathan was presented with a certificate and prize of £250 by Derec Stockley, Director of Examinations at a special event held at WJEC.  He also received a personal letter from Gareth Pierce, WJEC’s Chief Executive congratulating him on his tremendous results, "an outstanding achievement, and evidence of the hard work that you and your teachers put into preparing for the examinations."

Students Put On Their Thinking Caps

Year 11 GCSE Religious Studies group put their thinking caps on for Revd. Williams.

Using De Bono's Thinking Hats they evaluate whether the war in Iraq can be classed a Just War and whether the UK should unilaterally disarm their nuclear weapons.  A serious subject, but they clearly had fun

'Faith in the World' Sixth Form Conference

The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England Education Division hosted an A-Level conference entitled ‘Faith in the World’ and our school was invited to attend.  We accepted the invitation with enthusiasm, and our A Level Religious Studies students who attended were very pleased to represent Church-in-Wales schools at this event. The aim of the conference was to encourage students taking A-Level Religious Studies to engage with the speakers and each other on the implications of faith for society today.
