Admissions - Choosing the 'Right Route/Pathway'

The Bishop of Llandaff usually admits up to 160 places to students in Year 12. Current students at school are given priority of admission, providing they meet entry requirements. However, each year we admit a number of students from other schools in the local and wider area who wish to attend our sixth form.

Students who apply do so knowing that the school aims to provide an education based on Christian principles and therefore governors expect all students to play an active role in our school ethos.

Admissions for September 2024
Year 11 students (existing and external) are invited to attend our Open Evening on Thursday 16th November 2023. This will commence at 5.30pm until 7.30pm, with presentations from the Head of Sixth Form and Headteacher. There will also be an opportunity to visit subjects and speak to students/staff about the various courses on offer.

Application forms are available from this date and should be completed by Friday 15th December 2023.

Entry Requirements/Pathways

ROUTE ONE

4 A Levels & WBQ

For students who expect to achieve 7 or more A*-C grades in full course GCSE subjects, which include at least 5 or more B grades (courses equivalent to GCSE do not contribute towards this requirement)

ROUTE TWO

3 A Levels & WBQ

For students who expect to achieve 5 or more A*-C grades in full course GCSE subjects, which include at least 3 or more B grades (courses equivalent to GCSE do not contribute towards this requirement)

ROUTE THREE

3 A Levels & WBQ

For students who expect to achieve 5 or more A*-C grades in full course GCSE subjects (a 'vocational combination route' is more suited to students who have achieved predominantly C grades at GCSE and/or followed GCSE equivalent courses). Students must take at least one BTEC subject if their results fall into this category

PLEASE NOTE: Most AS/A’ level subjects have an entry requirement of at least a C grade at GCSE. However, to study A-Level English, Mathematics*, Economics*, Business Studies* and Science there is a minimum B grade entry requirement.

* B grade in Higher Tier Mathematics also required.

If, after results day, your actual GCSE grades do not meet the requirements for your chosen route it will be necessary for you to re-consider your option choices in consultation with the Head of Sixth Form.

In nearly all cases, students follow the Advanced Skills Baccaulreate (Wales) qualification, which is a compulsory element of our curriculum pathways. There are a very few exceptions to this. For example, where student participates in an elite sport (or equivalent). These will be considered on an individual case by the Head of Sixth Form.
